J. H. Hamilton family letters relating to sheepherding in Montana, ca. 1873-1894 (bulk 1890-1894).

Letters from the Hamilton family in Montana written to their parents Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hamilton. The letters, many of them written on the Sage Creek Sheep Company's letterhead, describe the sheepherding business and homesteading, news of family in Montana, and news of unusual events, such as the murder of a ranch hand by another sheepherder. The letters from Belle and Lizzie describe more domestic details: getting meals for ranch hands at shearing time, growing gardens, and papering rooms. Accompanied by a letter from a friend in Idaho describing his life there, two additional letters from others, and a statement of account for J. H. Hamilton dated ca. 1873.

Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton (b. August 9, 1757, Albany, NY–d. November 9, 1854, Washington, DC) was the daughter of Continental Army General Philip Schuyler, a Revolutionary War general, and Catherine Van Rensselaer Schuyler.
